Although it is common to translate "ko-wu" as "investigating things" and

mind is capable of illuminating the li of something; he does not have to
figure it out. Ch'eng l acknowledges that natural phenomena have li,

"perplexity," "distrust," "losing one's way,'' physical dangers, and
psychic discomforts. However, the same character may be given the more
positive meaning of "reaching the culmination." To reach moral
perfection is the aim of the would­ be sage; nobility of character, in
turn, insures that ultimate victory can be snatched from temporary
defeat. As the Changes tells us, only the noble person "is capable of
being in straits without losing the power to succeed" because in times
of crisis he is prompted to undertake a thorough going reform.
Consequently, the virtuous individual not only survives present
difficulties, but even prospers as soon as the times turn more *FAVOURABLE*.

Appraisal texts focus on examples of those who have no haven to which
they can escape. Occasionally, even meritorious individuals find
themselves caught up in wider cycles of inauspicious fate.

APPRAISAL #1: He sees his limits as limits, So people embrace him as center.
FATHOMING #1: Recognizing his own limits Means: Emotions dwell at the
center.

The first lines of the Appraisal and Fathoming talk literally of "seeing
his extremity as extremity." One interpretation for the lines (reflected
in this translation) presumes that the truly superior human being exerts
all his charismatic powers to attract, then utilize talented supporters,
who regard him as "center." Given his suasive influence, the people
imitate him, letting their emotions also be centered.

Two other interpretations for the same lines are equally possible,
however, given such a wide range of meaning for the word "extremity."
One alternative has the noble man "seeing the limits of his desperate
straits." The moral superior faces present calamity with perfect
equanimity, in part because no misfortune exists that can deter a truly
determined would­ be sage from achieving moral perfection. As the
Analects says, "The superior man can withstand extreme hardships. It is
only the small man who, when faced with them, is swept off his feet."
Once the individual approaches the perfection of the sage, he then
employs suasive example to rouse others to redirect their attention to
the core values that constitute the Good in Confucian tradition.

In yet another reading, the person of virtue "pushes to the very
extremes his own limits" so that he daily improves in virtue.
Eventually, having realized the full human potential for sagehood, he
becomes a much beloved model for the common people.

APPRAISAL #2: Failing to see his limits as limits, The people come to
reject him as center.
FATHOMING #2: Unaware of his limits
MEANS: *DECEIT* can be made to flourish.

This verse is the mirror opposite of the preceding one. As with
Appraisal 1, there are three possible readings: (1) the evil individual
fails to seek guidance since he does not recognize his own limits; (2)
the weak person's good intentions are jettisoned in the face of
calamity; and (3) the petty man fails to push his potential for humanity
to its natural limits. The result of any one of these three failures is
the same. The people will "reject him as center."

APPRAISAL #3: However desperate, his thoughts apprehend.
FATHOMING #3: Apprehension in desperate straits Means: A tutor resides
in the heart.

"Apprehending" for proponents of the Confucian school refers to
"apprehending the [Confucian] Way," while true "desperation" is measured
in terms of distance from the Way. When a superior person faces a
crisis, the inner resources of the heart/mind will see him through. Such
resources have been developed by a prior intensive study of various
classical precedents, rather than by "exhaustive [analytical] thinking.''

APPRAISAL #4: The soil is not sweet.
Trees wither and lose their leaves.
FATHOMING #4: A disharmonious earth
MEANS: *AFFLICTION* *EXTENDS* *TO* *THE* *COMMON* *PEOPLE*.

When the earth, symbol of all that nourishes, fails to support luxuriant
growth, the common people find themselves without sufficient food to eat
{ie. #86 - I AM NOT A ROBBER OF FOOD {%10}}. Soon famine and its
attendant diseases appear. Wise leaders work hard to remedy this
situation, for "if the common people have not enough for their needs,
the ruler cannot expect to have enough for his needs."

APPRAISAL #5: The stew has no rice cakes.
His belly rumbles k'an­k'an, empty as a drum, Yet he does not lose his
model.
FATHOMING #5: Cooked dishes without rice
MEANS: Even so, he does not lose the Right.

Appraisal 5 as the ruler of the tetragram depicts the perfect model of
upright behaviour in poverty. This individual is so poor that he cannot
afford to supplement his meager stew of greens with nourishing grains.
Nevertheless, he manages to perfectly embody the ancient models of
proper behaviour. In this he is like Yen Hui, the favourite disciple of
Confucius, of whom the Master remarked:

Incomparable indeed was Hui. A handful of rice to eat, a gourdful of
water to drink {

Troubles attack the person.
FATHOMING #6: Mountains without beasts
MEANS: Trouble to the common people.

In early Chinese tradition, the products of the mountains and rivers are
reserved for the common people, who use them to supplement their meager
diets and incomes. Evil rulers often claimed these areas as their own
property, causing a severe reduction in the people's standard of living.
Under such conditions, "While some men can get enough to eat,/ Few men
can eat their fill." Such exploitation of the people is likely to backfire.

It is also possible that the common people have wrecklessly misused
available natural resources; on their own initiative, they have *BURNT*
*THE* *HILLSIDES* to flush out all the game and drained the lakes to
catch all the fish. Despite the magnitude of the initial catch, such
wasteful exploitation of limited resources destroys all future food sources.

APPRAISAL #7: Though he straightens his step, He lands in prison.
In three years, he sees a pardon.
FATHOMING #7: Righting his foot
MEANS: The danger gets him peace.

Appraisal 7 ordinarily represents the loss of one's ambition, but here
it corresponds to lucky Day. The subject of the poem modifies his
conduct in accordance with the Right. Though he is thrown into prison,
his case will be reviewed and he will be pardoned. The superior man
calmly awaits better times, knowing that ultimately he will be vindicated.

APPRAISAL #9: He trudges through frost and snow, With his neck bound to
his knees.
FATHOMING #8: Bound neck to knee
MEANS: After all, life is not worth living.

Frost and snow symbolize danger of all sorts since they are difficult to
negotiate in the best of times. Now, bound neck to knee, this person
faces additional impediments. Even if he survives this ordeal, the pain
will be so great that life will hardly be worth living.

APPRAISAL #9: Jade circlets are smashed and tablets broken. In mortar
and stove, frogs breed.
Calamities from Heaven are loaded on.
